Alexandria, Then Back to Cairo

On the way to Alexandria we stopped at a Coptic Christian Church that dates from around 700, AD. Coptic Christians make up about 15% of the religious population of Egypt and most of the churches were built on sites where Mary and Joseph brought Jesus when they fled Herrod's edict to kill all male children under two years.

Alexandria has been the resort city of Egypt for centuries and is in contrast to Cairo a very clean and beautiful place. We had lunch in the former Palace of the King now a restaurant. The King was overthrown by the military and Gamel Abdul Nassar and Egypt has been ruled by dictators ever since. The military officers built villas on the beach of the palace grounds and occupy them to this day as an elite group, In 2008 the military controlled 50% of the Egyptian Economy.
