Pompeii was buried under tons of volcanic ash when Vesuvius erupted without warning in 74 AD. The city was preserved by the ash and casts have even been made of bodies where they died in the eruption. The casts are made when the body that has decayed left a hole in its exact image which was then filled with plaster. Even facial expressions are etched forever. Vesuvius still remains a dangerous volcano and Naples lies just at its base. No one knows when the next disaster will occur.

We spent a few hours at Pompeii and then traveled on to Rome. We stopped in the city for dinner before going on to our hotel.
