Day 5 - Kahului, Maui

This morning we got up at 2:00 am and embarked on an 8 hour tour of Haleakala at sunrise. This tour included a 38 mile downhill bike ride from the top of the crater after sunrise. John had a blast doing the bike ride and I very much enjoyed riding in the van behind the bikers. The tour was not for beginners, and I just had not ridden a bike in so long that I was definitely a beginner!

We got to see the sunrise from a place close to the Haleakala summit at about 975 feet above sea level. It was cold and windy. I had on a fleece jacket and a windbreaker and was still very cold, since the wind was blowing 15-20 mph the whole time.

The sunrise was spectacular, although not the most beautiful one I had ever seen. But it is so worth the wait in the cold. I recommend this sight for any brave soul that is willing to give up a few hours of sleep for some natural beauty. Just wear all the clothes you can fit on your body and huddle close to anyone you know.

The bike ride took place after the sunrise and the group of 7 bikers made amazing progress down the mountain. They were supposed to contain their speeds at around 15-20 mph, but the van driver told me that they averaged about 30 mph. John told me later that it was really a great feeling to get to go down the mountain at that speed. I could tell they were having fun whenever we would stop for photos.

We got back to the ship around 11:30 am and the rest of the day until dinner was used as catch-up time for our sleep.

Tonight was Halloween. I wore an orange shirt with black pants and put on some red glitter-covered devil horns for show. The ship had a haunted house set up on Deck 13 and we had fun going through it.
