Mount St Helens National Monument, WA

Mount St Helens is an active volcano in the state of Washington, about 2 hours northeast of Portland, OR. The mountain last erupted in 1980 and the whole top and part of the side of the mountain exploded. In 2006 when we visited the site, it had been 26 years since the eruption. The forest is starting to come back now, but the devastation left by the 1980 event is still present. There is a visitor center and an observatory that are run by the National Forest Service and are well worth a stop.
